Visit the well-preserved Byzantine fortress in Plotinoupoli, take a stroll in the old city and the nearby Byzantine fortress of Pythio, where the Kantakouzenos noble family stored its treasures in the 14th century. The big mosque (the Beyazit Camii) in the centre of Didymoteiho is worth seeing. It is considered to be the oldest and one of the biggest mosques in Europe.
Located in the middle of the prefecture, the area is the ideal starting point for excursions around Evros. Daily trips to the mountains and towns that we like and recommend include:
DIDYMOTEICHO
SOUFLI
Visit picturesque Soufli, the city of silk, with its unique architecture and cocoon houses. The four silk museums will impress you. Before you leave, do not forget to sample the local cold meats, tsipouro and wine.
POMAK VILLAGES
In the heart of the forest in northern Epirus lie the Pomak villages known as the Pomakohoria. The people living in this area have distinctive features and cultural and religious traits. Visit the old tekke, the Bektashi monastery with the tomb of Tekir Ali, one of the founders of the Dervish order.
Eurothirama
In the northernmost point of Greece, in the acritic Pentalofos of Evros, is located the breeding unit Eurothirama, which also provides high quality hospitality and catering services. It is a standard unit where one can combine meals, days of rest and walks on the paths of a huge natural, wooded area but also to see the animals raised there by the showrooms. The restaurant, which uses exclusively domestic or local products, is a reference point of Evros combining nature with tradition.
