The Byzantine Museum is housed in a new building of 2,470 sq.m. with ground floor, basement and first floor, which are developing, apart from exhibition equipment (400 sq.m.), warehouses, laboratories, refreshment room, timeless colors, cultural event hall and periodic exhibitions. The plot area 5500 sq.m. is a donation of the Municipality of Didymoteicho for the implementation and housing of the Museum.
The Museum’s workshop was completed in 2010.
The Museum presents the history of Didymoteicho in a parallel narration starting from the 2nd century A.D. when Plotinopolis was founded on the hill of Agia Petra by the emperor Trajan. Visitors will learn that Didymoteicho was one of the most important cities in Byzantium and at various times was the administrative and military base of the Byzantine Empire. It became the capital of Byzantium three times and the place where Ioannis Kantakouzinos chose to be crowned emperor, succeeding Andronikos III.
