TURKEY AND BULGARIA

Ten kilometres after the Kastanies border checkpoint lies the renowned Edirne, known as Andrianoupolis in Greek. Edirne is a wonderful, historic Thracian city with very little that is touristy about it. It was the capital city of the Ottoman state until 1453 and was designed by the greatest Ottoman architect of the time. Its unique character remains intact to this day. Edirne is one of the best examples of adaptation of the traditional Orient to modern-day Turkey: mosques stand next to Christian churches and bazaars, hamams, covered markets and roadside inns coexist in harmony with the vibrant elements of a modern-day student town. We will visit the imposing Beyazit Mosque, the Jewish synagogue and the palace of Murat II, and will take a tour around the tallest mosques in all of Turkey.
In the south-eastern part of Bulgaria, in the direction of Haskovo, lies Svilengrad, a bustling town with a big market, a casino and numerous entertainment options, ideal for a brief stopover and a chance to refuel. From there, Haskovo, the administrative centre of the region bearing the same name, is only 57 kilometres away. Inhabited from as early as the 3rd-4th century AD, it is today a typical Bulgarian city: it has preserved elements from real socialism, while also having welcomed modern cultural influences. The city is known for its many museums, theatres and galleries, as well as for the world’s largest monument to the Virgin Mary, which is 32 metres tall. Not to be missed are the Mediaeval Shishman fortress, the Mineralni Bani spas a bit further out and the Hellenistic tombs in Aleksandrovo, with their ornate murals.
Ivaylovgrad lies on the eastern fringes of Rhodope, in the southern part of Bulgaria, and dates back to the 10th century AD. The city is in one of the lesser developed districts of Bulgaria, with its characteristic Soviet architecture from the previous century intact. Ivaylovgrad is a popular destination owing to its unsullied natural environment and the dam on the Arda River, where organized ecotourism offers interesting recreation options. The most remarkable monuments in the area are the Armyra villa, an impressive 1st-century-AD Roman edifice with extraordinary mosaic floors; the Mediaeval Lyutitsa fortress, also known as the Marble City; Aterenski Bridge and a number of Thracian archaeological sites and 19th-century churches.
Twenty-five kilometres from the Kipi border checkpoint, heading in the direction of Istanbul, which is a three-hour drive away, we come to Keşan, the largest town in the region, where, if it is a Saturday, it is worth stopping and visiting its famous bazaar. Then continuing on Keşan’s regional road to Çannakale, we reach our destination in 40 minutes. Aenos (its ancient Greek name), now known as Enez, is one of the oldest Thracian cities. The magnificent growth it enjoyed in ancient times and the fact that Christians and Muslims coexisted in this city for centuries have bequeathed to the area its remarkable monuments. Built at the mouth of the Evros River, it was also a major port in the area until the 19th century. Sections of the port still survive. Today, it is a fishing village much loved by both locals and travellers, who frequent the local eateries and take a dip in the Thracian sea.
